Charon was right, people didn't show up to hospitals dressed for the occasion, it was just that even when he was caught off guard, Giovanni was in a perpetual state of snazzy dressing, and truthfully, he carried himself with such confidence and finesse that he could look dignified if he showed up in a onesie.
"Of course." He wanted to keep it short and business like, but dignity and finesse were useless without manners, and he'd return the question for the sake of being polite. "You?"

Charon knew that the man was probably just trying to be polite, and honestly, he was glad for that. Working as a bartender (and he was sure, it applied to anyone else in customer service or retail) had taught him to value little day to day acts of politeness. After all, some people obviously had no idea they existed.
"No, actually..." He laughed a little and shook his head. "I don't even know the guy's name, but I want to make sure that he has family or something to look after him before I leave him here." He shrugged. It might have been a bit weird, but he was pretty certain his roommate was used to him being at the hospital. Drunk friends, one of the dancer girls at work getting hurt, with any of that he was the go-to guy for staying in the waiting room, so it didn't seem that weird to him.

"Is that so?" The old man asked bemused. "What're you going to do if he doesn't?" It was good to see there were still people in the world that gave a damn, but young kids were so eager that they rushed into things without thinking. Dom definitely learned that lesson today.
Children these days.

Charon laughed a little quietly and shrugged. "Probably wait here, see if he's allowed to go home. If not, do what people normally do for folk stuck in the hospital... go out and get him some real food." He said with a grin. "No one should be stuck in the hospital on their own. My little brother practically grew up in one. Not nice stuff." He shrugged again. "Hopefully you'll get to go home soon and whoever it is will be okay. They don't exactly make waiting rooms very comfortable before they ask you to spend hours in them."

Aw, the kid was being so nice, so much even that he'd spare him the humiliation of pointing out all the flaws in his plan. He meant well. "You're here on your own accord."

The conversation faded out, Charon picking out a pair of headphones from his pocket and sticking them into a cheap mp3 player. He only wore one, all the while waiting for the news that his acquaintance was alright. Nurses came and went, telling other people the status of their charges, and people filtered in and out as they got food or did whatever they were doing.
It took about three hours, and a nurse, a middle-aged, tired looking woman, came in with a clip-board. She looked down at it, then up at the old man. "Mr. Fettuccine?" She called. Then, also, "Mr. Styx?"
Charon, looking surprised, popped the other head phone from his ear and sat up, pointing at himself. "Me?" he was a little confused. The nurse nodded and beckoned the two of them to follow her.

Giovanni knew that when someone had their headphones in it meant they didn't want to be talked to and that was fine with him. He followed suit and practiced his patience in the waiting room until the nurse called for the both of them, in which Charon earned himself another look and followed the nurse in.
There was Dom, wide awake, with enough morphine pumping into his system to warrant a half dazed dopey grin despite his condition, bruised and scraped and crippled. His grandpa suppressed any immediate grandfatherly affection, waiting first for Charon's reaction.

Charon was a little hesitant to follow the man and the nurse down the hospital halls and into the room the young man as in. After all, if the fellow was the boy's family, what did he have to worry about? But they both seemed pretty okay with him being around so he did indeed follow them, hoping for the best.
Of course, that hope was soon ruined when he saw the state of his acquaintance. "Oh, man, you look terrible..." Charon sighed, looking at the boy in the bed with a faintly distressed expression. He was more upset than he looked, but he was pretty good at keeping that sort of stuff under control. "How do you feel...?" He didn't exactly move very far into the room, but he was the first to speak, and had no idea if he was going to be answered or not.

Giovanni casually eyed Charon long enough to take a personal note of his distress. He must have been a very empathetic kid, to care so much for a stranger, or maybe he just had a lot of time on his hands, possibly unemployed? He'll see.
For now he shared Charon's dilemma of trying to keep his emotions under control. He could hardly suppress his smirk. Atta boy.
Dom layed in bed, looking thoughtful as if he was assessing the situation. How exactly did he feel after being at school all day and being brutalized in the wake of a horrible disaster?
"Mmmm....huuuungry."He hadn't eaten since lunch at school.

Charon could not hold back a brief snort of laughter, and he covered his mouth with one of his hands. That was a sensible response. Major surgery did have that tendency, didn't it? And the boy was hopped up on pain meds so it was very excusable. Still, he wasn't too sure what to do... "Did you want me to run out and grab him something?" He offered, mostly to Mr. Fettucini. "I don't really want to impose, especially if you're here to take care of him." It was a little awkward, but Charon could handle it. The best way to sort shit out was not to ignore it, so he might as well ask.

"He needs to go home anyway, we'll make him something to eat there." His grandson wasn't going to be eating whatever some stranger could fetch from a variety store.
"Dom? What would you like to eat?"
"Aheheh...donkey."

Charon swallowed another brief laugh. He wasn't bothered by Mr. Fettuccine declining his offer; home food was always so much better.
The nurse took that time, once the food issue had been decided, to speak up and explain the nature of the boy's injury (in the duration of which, Charon managed to learn his name, Dominic). He was going to need to use a wheelchair for at least a month, only to let the actual outside injury heal up. After that he could use crutches and start physio. He'd be able to walk again... but sports were almost entirely out of the question.
During all of this, Charon felt a little out of place. He hadn't exactly been told to leave, so he was staying around, but he wasn't certain what to do with himself.

Grandpa just nodded sagely as the nurse explained the nature of Dom's condition to him. Under a microscope, you could see the corner of his lips curl into a slight scowl. He didn't want to have to break the news to his wife, or to Dom once he was coherent to understand the limitations of his injury.
He sighed.
"Where do you live?"

Charon gave the man a bit of a surprised look. "I live in the campus apartments, the ones closest to downtown." He said. He lived there with his roommate/brother, and his little brother lived in the actual dorms attached to the college... But, why? "Why do you ask?" He tilted his head, curious. Being as he knew little to nothing about Dominic and his aspirations, the damage of what the nurse had said didn't totally sink in. Sure, the fact that he was fit meant that he probably exercised but there were ways around that even with a leg injury...

"We're leaving, you may as well get a ride with us." Oh that's why he could stay for so long, he was a student, depending on what he was studying that was acceptable.
The nurse took the hint and left to fetch Dom's chair.
